To consider the watercolor paintings of Molly Hashimoto (American, b. 1951) is to see the American wilderness with new eyes. The freshness of her vision, the purity of her palette, the remarkable attention she pays to atmosphere lend her landscapes and portraits of plants and animals qualities quite different from the crisp and saturated photographs to which we’ve become accustomed. They provide a counterpoint to the homages of John Muir (American, b. Scotland, 1838–1914), a great champion of the wild places of the earth, whose words accompany the twelve paintings in this year’s calendar.
